I love that experience of being fully immersed in the task at hand, while enjoying the process and having access to all that juicy creative energy.
In this short blog post I share habits and activities we can engage in to help us enter this immersive, timeless space. I’ve also included one of my favourite Tai Chi sequences, which I’m excited to share with you here.
The flow state brings about a merging of the individual (mind, body, soul) and the present moment. When we enter this state, even work no longer feels like work, and challenges become fun puzzles to solve.
So how can we help ourselves more regularly access that place where ideas flow freely, where we’re not overcome by feelings like fear and anxiety that increase our self-doubt, and instead we enter a space where creativity can rise to meet us where we are?
Here are a few methods I find helpful:
- Engage in activities that provide you with enjoyment and satisfaction – hobbies, artistic pursuits, play, sports
- Declutter your space – create a supportive environment, make space for inspiration to find you.
- Movement – dance, run, Yoga, Tai-Chi….
- Add appreciation to current habits – as you brush your teeth or walk your dog, what can you appreciate?
- Be mindful – notice the sounds and sights as you go about your day.
- Recall memories of being in a flow state – bring to mind past experiences of being in that place and let this fuel you.
- Spent time in nature – nature can heal our hearts, calm our minds and bring us inspiration.
- Surround yourself with your own creations or those of others that you love – meditate with these and invite the creativity energy that was present to come join you.
One of my favorite ways to enter the flow state is by doing Tai Chi. It helps me go with the flow and allow what is. It also helps me stay centered and balanced, move stuck energy and emotions, and stay connected to both earth and spirit. Definitely worth adding some Tai Chi to your day, if you ask me.
Here’s a short Tai Chi sequence inspired by the beautiful beaches of Albufeira, Portugal. It’s under 4 minutes long and will help you find your flow anytime.
I invite you to reflect on how you enter the flow state? What habits or activities help you access your creative energy? Are there new habits you’d like to add to your day?
